Panglao boat operators to file complaint over alleged illegal fee collection
Pumpboat operators in the tourist island of Panglao are set to file a complaint against the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) for alleged illegal fee collection, local sources reported Thursday.
The PAMB is accused of collecting unauthorized fees from tourists and boat operators conducting business at Virgin Island, purportedly for environmental protection.
Crisanto Abellar, spokesperson for the Panglao Boat Operators Association, claims the collection is illegal, citing the use of fake receipts and door-to-door collection methods, sometimes occurring in the evening.
"When we asked about the amount collected and its allocation, they became hostile, stating we have no right to inquire as non-PAMB members," Abellar told Bohol media.
Operators reportedly face threats of operation bans if they refuse to pay the fees.
The association has sought assistance from the Senate for an investigation into the matter.
Affected parties are calling for a temporary suspension of fee collection pending the probe.
PAMB officials were not immediately available for comment.
Panglao, a popular tourist destination in Bohol, is known for its beaches and marine biodiversity.
