The proposal to allow a private company to manage the Albur landfill was discussed recently, as the current issues plaguing the facility continue.
Gov. Aris Aumentado suggested that outsourcing the operation of the Albur landfill would relieve the local government unit (LGU) of operational burdens, allowing it to simply collect revenue shares from the landfill’s use.
Currently, at least 18 municipalities, including Tagbilaran City, utilize the sanitary landfill, paying fees to dispose of their waste there.
Aumentado argued that privatization would be beneficial, reducing the administrative headache for the LGU.
He noted that if the local government continues to face problems in running the landfill, exploring private management could be a viable option.
Albur Mayor Don Ritchie Buates commented that he would support privatization if the majority of the town agrees.
He has previously engaged with potential investors interested in operating the landfill but had set the idea aside.
