TRANSPO SECTOR VOUCHERS TO REVIVE ECONOMY UNDER GCQ
Targeted cash aid will revive the transportation sector reeling from the adverse impact of COVID-19 quarantine measures, according to Misamis Oriental 2ND District Rep. Juliette Uy, Member of the House Committee on Transportation.
"I suggest bus and ship transportation fare vouchers for poor to middle middle-income Filipinos amounting P100 billion. That would be about P2,000 each for 50 million Filipino commuters (o halos kalahati ng populasyon ng Pilipinas). Sapat na iyan bilang panimulang ayuda para pamasahe ng 50 milyong commuters," Uy said.
“For the jeepney and tricycle drivers, Uy is seeking gasoline vouchers for PUJs at the rate of P3,500 x 2 million drivers for a total of P7 billion,” she added.
Uy explained, “the LTFRB database and the tricycle units registry of local government units can be put together for the targeting of the beneficiaries and direct release of the funds to them through the remittance outlets, ATMs, and debit cards.”
“All that P107 billion can be considered economic stimulus because the money will circulate through the economy. That is not an expense, that is an investment in the future of our country,” Uy said.
“The funds from this economic stimulus can be sourced from the P300 billion in cash the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas transferred to the Bureau of Treasury. There are also remittances from funds collected by the government-owned or controlled corporations. These funds have not been used for the Social Amelioration Program and other aid programs,” Uy, Appropriations Committee Vice-Chair, added
“As you can see, there is leeway to increase the P107 billion stimulus for the transport and tourism activities of our country,” Uy said. (END)
