ProtonVPN expands into Africa with new servers in South Africa

ProtonVPN, a VPN service created by ProtonMail, now offers VPN servers on five continents after the addition today of four new servers in South Africa. The decision to expand to South Africa was made by the ProtonVPN user community. Over 13,000 users responded to a community poll last month, and South Africa received the third-most votes. ProtonVPN now provides servers in 21 countries and plans to expand to an additional 20 over the next 12 months.

While user security is the primary factor in determining which countries will host ProtonVPN servers, the community’s input has always guided the service. Founded by the same team that created ProtonMail, the world’s largest encrypted email provider, ProtonVPN remains a community-supported VPN service.

“Like ProtonMail, ProtonVPN was developed to protect journalists and activists around the world, many who are working under very restrictive regimes,” said Dr. Andy Yen, CEO of ProtonMail. “An increasing number of our users are from Africa and extending our network to Africa will improve performance for all ProtonVPN users on the continent”.

Access to information and communication on the Internet have recently come under attack on the continent. Both Uganda and Tanzania have implemented taxes on social media that have had the effect of limiting the use and chilling free speech. By extending its network to Africa, ProtonVPN hopes to better serve the African internet community by providing the tools to circumvent government censorship and surveillance.

ProtonVPN believes that everyone has the right to privacy and security on the Internet which is why we offer a free, unlimited data VPN service. Our users with paid accounts subsidize this service, allowing us to keep ProtonVPN ad-free.
